Here at CIFEC we are dedicated to ensuring that your child receives the best opportunity possible to prepare for life after Year 12; whether that is the world of work or college. We have a dedicated and qualified staff committed to doing all they can to help your child reach their full potential. But we realize that this is a joint-effort. It is going to take CIFEC, you and your child all working together to make this programme a success! I love the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child”! I quote it often and I tell people that any child that I come in contact with is a part of my village and I am going to do all that I can to help raise them! I am excited to have your child join our village!
Please make an effort to get to know us! We will have regular parents meetings and reporting sessions, but don’t feel like you are limited to those occasions to make contact with us. Tutors will be making contact with you during this first term and feel free to contact them through email at any time. We would ask if you need to speak to someone in person, that you make an appointment through our school office.
Research shows that students perform better in school with parental involvement. I know it is sometimes hard to know how to get involved when your children are teenagers. One of the things you can do is set aside a period of time each evening for school work. Even if they don't have homework, they can catch up on reading. Insist on them spending at least an hour each evening and check on them to make sure they are actually doing school work and not just surfing the web or chatting with friends. Tie this to rewards – movie money, phone top-ups etc. Teaching our children to work for what they want is a very valuable lesson. Another thing you can do is keep in touch with their teachers. We will make an effort to communicate with you on a regular basis, but you can also reach out to us whenever you have questions or just want an update on your child's progress. Just knowing that you are checking up on them will be an incentive for them to work hard. Get involved in the Friends of CIFEC association that will be starting soon. These are just a few ideas of how you can get involved and be an active participant in your child's education. We commit to giving other ideas throughout the year.
We look forward to meeting as many of you as possible, and to working with you to prepare your children for their bright and exciting future! Thank you for entrusting your children to us; it is both an honour and a privilege to work with them!
Sincerely,
Delores Thompson
